About Us

For The Love Of A Child Is Dedicated To Improving The Lives Of Children With Special Needs And Their Families within the Durham Region.

In 1996, thirteen women met in a support group for parents of children with special needs. At that time, many of the children did not have an official diagnosis, leaving the parents in limbo over their child’s care and prognosis. During a session, one of the mothers reported that after years of testing and uncertainty, her daughter was finally given a diagnosis. This was fantastic news, as she could now focus on helping her child.

She found out that there was an upcoming conference for families of children with the same syndrome as her daughter. Attending this conference would give her family a chance to meet with doctors who specialized in this syndrome and network with other families who were facing the same challenges. The conference was being held in England and she was unable to pay the complete cost of the trip.

Determined to help its members, the support group rallied and promised to do whatever they could to raise the money for her trip. Brainstorming began and the group decided to have a dance to raise the money. With the support and enthusiasm from the community, enough money was raised to help supplement the cost of sending this family to the conference.

For the Love of a Child Children’s Charity began as an endeavor to help one family, but through our efforts, we recognized there was a need to provide financial support to local families on an ongoing basis, and from there the charity was born.

One thing that sets us apart is our charity is strictly operated by volunteers, many of whom are parents and siblings that have personal, first-hand experience with children with special needs. All of us understand the sacrifices that families make, the hardships that we face on a daily basis, and more importantly the joy and compassion that these children bring to our lives.
